Five reasons Victor Osimhen to Chelsea makes more sense than a move to Manchester United
Published: April 15, 2025
As transfer speculation continues to swirl around Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen, Chelsea and Manchester United are among the clubs linked with the former African Footballer of the Year.
While both clubs are historic giants, Chelsea currently offer a more promising environment for the 26-year-old Napoli striker.
Here are five key reasons Osimhen should consider a move to Stamford Bridge over Old Trafford:
1. Clear Path to European Football
Chelsea are well-positioned to return to Europe next season. They currently sit sixth in the Premier League and are strong favourites to win the UEFA Europa Conference League, having reached the quarter-finals.
Either achievement would secure European football. In contrast, Manchester United are enduring a difficult campaign—14th in the Premier League and with their only route to Europe being to win the UEFA Europa League, a competition they are far from guaranteed to win given their inconsistent performances.
2. Nigerian Success Stories at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea has been a successful platform for Nigerian players in the past. Celestine Babayaro, Victor Moses and John Mikel Obi both enjoyed trophy-laden spells at the club, with Mikel winning the Premier League and Champions League.
Osimhen would be joining a team with a proven history of nurturing Nigerian talent.
3. Stability and Project Under Enzo Maresca
With Enzo Maresca taking charge, Chelsea are building a long-term project centred on youth, tactical discipline, and an attacking style of play.
The Italian manager, known for his work at Leicester City, is seen as a modern, progressive coach.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are in a transitional phase under new coach Rúben Amorim, who is yet to steady the ship amid internal uncertainty and inconsistent form.
4. Superior Supporting Cast
At Chelsea, Osimhen would link up with a vibrant core of young talent, including Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernández, and Moisés Caicedo. The creative support around him would maximise his goal-scoring potential.
Manchester United’s squad, in contrast, has lacked cohesion, creativity, and confidence throughout the season.
5. London Factor and Global Appeal
A move to London offers lifestyle advantages and greater commercial visibility. Chelsea’s global brand and commercial network could significantly enhance Osimhen's marketability.
With Manchester United currently in turmoil, Chelsea represents a more stable and upwardly mobile option for the Nigerian star.
