'I need people who can go to war' – Rangers coach insists he won't risk Balogun if unfit for Athletic Club clash
Published: April 14, 2025
Rangers interim coach Barry Ferguson has made it clear he will not risk playing Leon Balogun or any other unfit players in Thursday’s decisive UEFA Europa League quarter-final second leg against Athletic Club in Spain.
The experienced Nigerian centre-back played a pivotal role in the first leg at Ibrox, delivering a resolute defensive performance that helped Rangers secure a goalless draw, despite being reduced to ten men for a significant portion of the match.
The 36-year-old recorded nine clearances, won two aerial duels, and was not dribbled past once – underlining his value at the heart of the defense.
However, his absence from the squad that battled to a 2-2 draw against Aberdeen on Sunday has raised concerns over his fitness ahead of the high-stakes clash at San Mamés.
Speaking to the BBC ahead of the trip to Bilbao, Ferguson said he is prioritizing physical readiness over reputation, emphasizing that only fully fit players will be considered for selection.
"Look, I've got a really good idea in my mind the way I'm going to approach it (Bilbao),” Ferguson said.
"In terms of personnel, I just need to wait on three or four players that are going to be available.
"But if somebody is touch and go, I am not going to risk them because I need people who can go to war, basically, what an opportunity this is.
"Not just for the group players but the club to hopefully get's into the (Europa League) semifinals."
Balogun has been a dependable presence in the Rangers backline this season, featuring in 25 matches across all competitions and chipping in with a goal and an assist.
His consistent performances have sparked discussions around a potential recall to the Nigerian national team ahead of the upcoming Unity Cup tournament, set to be held at the Gtech Community Stadium in London.
