Ajax GK Onana Expects Super Eagles To Be 'Stronger' Than Cameroon
Published: July 05, 2019Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper André Onana was the player nominated to represent the Cameroon players at Friday's traditional pre-match press conference and has revealed he's excited to face the Super Eagles.
Nigeria could have drawn a weaker team on paper but by losing against Madagascar, they were paired with the Indomitable Lions in the round of 16.
Onana admitted that the Super Eagles are stronger than the Cameroonians but they hope to perform better on Saturday.
''I expect them to be stronger than us, we expect a very strong team but like I said before we just have to be sure we are stronger than them, we are ready,'' said Onana to reporters including allnigeriasoccer.com.
Nigeria qualified for the 2018 World Cup at the expense of Cameroon, beating them 4-0 in Uyo while they were held to a 1-1 draw in Yaounde; Onana has put the past behind him and is focused on the present.
''We lost against them in 2017, that is already in the past so it is better to forget that. We know why we are here, we are very excited to play against them, it's a nice game, tough game.
''It's what we are training for, the concentration is 100 percent and I am very confident. I am used to those games, let's see tomorrow, I am excited.''
Onana refused to explain why he rejected a call-up to the Cameroon squad in 2017.
The goalkeeper added : ''I didn't come for so many reasons but I cannot mention them now because we have an important game tomorrow, especially against Nigeria, we are going to talk about it another time.''
The 23-year-old Onana has seen his reputation skyrocket after helping Ajax reach the Champions League semifinals last season and he has posted four shutouts in his last four international appearances.
