Super Eagles GK Stars For Fortuna Dusseldorf U23s After Making First Team Matchday Squad
Published: November 04, 2019Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye prevented Fortuna Dusseldorf II from suffering a heavy loss to Rot-Weiß Oberhausen in a German Regionalliga clash staged at Stadion Niederrhein, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The Nigeria international returned to play for Fortuna Dusseldorf U23 team on Sunday after making the first team's matchday squad when they tackled Erzgebirge Aue in the second round of the DFB Pokal on October 30.
The jury is still out on whether he deserves a place in the Super Eagles squad having conceded 15 goals in eight appearances so far this season in the Regionalliga.
But before the Super Eagles fans pass judgment, it should be known that Okoye has not been adequately protected by his defenders.
Indeed, the 20-year-old made series of superb saves to keep Fortuna Dusseldorf II in the game in yesterday's clash against Erzgebirge Aue and it was only until the 87th minute that the home team eked out a 2-1 win after Raphael Steinmetz converted a controversial spot kick.
With in-form Kaizer Chiefs netminder Daniel Akpeyi and Ikechukwu Ezenwa named in the Nigeria squad for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho, it remains to be seen if Okoye will make his competitive debut for the three-time African champions this month.
