FA Youth Cup: Son of ex-Gombe United star scores with acrobatic volley in Chelsea's 7-1 win v Merstham
Published: January 16, 2025Chizaram Ezenwata was among the scorers as Chelsea advanced to the fifth round of the prestigious FA Youth Cup following a 7-1 win over Merstham on Wednesday evening.
A center forward by trade, Chizzy is the son of former Gombe United star Ndubuisi Ezenwata, who was coached by former Golden Eaglets manager Manu Garba during his playing days in Nigeria.
Chelsea U18s Nigerian coach, Hassan Sulaiman included Landon Emenalo, son of retired Nigeria international left-back Michael Emenalo, and Olutayo Subuloye in the starting lineup against Merstham.
Merstham managed to hold out for fourteen minutes before Shumaira Mheuka scored the first of his three goals.
Kavuma-McQueen doubled the advantage at minute 28 before Leo Cardoso added his name to the list of goalscorers five minutes later to make it 3-0.
Mheuka was on a hat-trick when he put Chelsea 4-0 up in the 32nd minute but Amari Perkins pulled one back six minutes before halftime.
In the second half, Mheuka and Walsh scored to increase the lead to 6-1 and Ezenwata, on his FA Youth Cup debut, wrapped up the scoring in the 89th minute.
Substituted in during the 58th minute, Ezenwata delivered a stunning goal, rising high and unleashing a spectacular acrobatic volley that found the back of the net.
Ezenwata, who has agreed a scholarship deal with Chelsea ahead of next season, has scored four goals for Chelsea U18s so far this season, including three in the U18 Premier League.
Chelsea will face the winner of Preston North End or Manchester United in the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup.
