Netherlands U17 Coach Reveals Precisely Where Golden Eaglets Are Very Good
Published: November 06, 2019Back-to-back European champions Netherlands produced a display of quality to overcome five-time world champions Nigeria in the round of 16 of the FIFA U17 World Cup on Wednesday morning.
A hat-trick from Ajax Amsterdam striker Sontje Hansen secured a win for Peter van der Veen's side while Olakunle Olusegun manged to open his goalscoing account in the first half.
KNVB coach van der Veen was satisfied with the win against Nigeria and highlighted the counter-attacking quality of the five-time world champions.
''We scored a good goal with Sontje Hansen, but were very sloppy in possession. So we were counter-attacking too much because of that. And that is precisely where Nigeria is very good,'' said van der Veen to the official website of the Dutch national teams.
''Fortunately we quickly scored to make it 2-1 then we got a penalty for 3-1 in the final minutes.''
Manu Garba's side earned a spot in the round of 16 after finishing first in Group B with six points.
They exited the tournament after conceding 9 goals and scoring nine goals, with Dabo Babes Academy attacking midfielder Ibrahim Said accounting for three thanks to his hat-trick vs Ecuador.
