Former Tottenham & Man Utd Stars Have Their Say On Penalty Won By Iheanacho Vs West Ham
Published: December 28, 2019In-form Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho netted his fifth goal of the season in all competitions as Leicester City returned to winning ways, beating West Ham United 2-1 at the London Stadium on Saturday evening.
The credit to Ayoze Perez who didn't give up and that created the goal for the Super Eagles striker, whose brilliant header from close range gave the Foxes the lead after 39 minutes.
West Ham hit back through Pablo Fornals just before half-time but the visitors regained the lead as Demarai Gray slotted home after brilliant work again by Perez 11 minutes into the second half.
There was some early drama involving Lukasz Fabianski and Iheanacho as the West Ham goalkeeper clattered into the Nigerian and the Pole was lucky to avoid a red card because the foul was committed inside the box.
During half-time of the game shown live on Supersport, former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tim Sherwood and ex-Manchester United striker Michael Owen had their say on the penalty awarded to Leicester City by referee David Coote.
Sherwood said : "Demarai Gray does brilliant there, gets past Declan Rice and he plays it over the top, far too much space behind. Fabianski thinks he has to come, should have stayed where he was.
"Iheanacho with a great touch to that, just tips it over the top and then he gets brought down. Quite rightly a penalty.
"If it's outside the area they send Fabianski off, because it's inside and a deliberate attempt to play the ball, it's quite rightly a yellow card".
Michael Owen added : "Iheanacho did great, he's played in between the two center halves there and then naturally you'd let the ball drop and hit it.
"Because he had awareness, he saw goalkeeper Fabianski coming off his line and he just nicked it before him, it was really good play".
Against the Hammers, Iheanacho went the distance in a Premier League match for the first time since December 5, 2018, and was joined on the pitch by Wilfred Ndidi with 20 minutes left on the clock.
