Will Liverpool's Forgotten Man Awoniyi Get His Chance At Anfield?
Published: May 19, 2020Taiwo Awoniyi will undoubtedly be relishing his chances of making his senior team debut for Liverpool in the near future, and will aim to keep the dream by continuing his new-found form for Mainz, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Having found playing opportunities hard to come by this season, the Nigeria U23 international was not expected so much to hit the ground running right away after the resumption of football, but that was exactly what he did five minutes after coming on as a substitute in their 2-2 draw with FC Cologne last weekend.
Since joining the Reds in August 2015, the 22-year-old have been farmed out on loan to five different clubs as he battles the task of obtaining a work permit in England as well getting to grips with the demands of senior football.
Significantly, he came alive during his second spell with Royal Excel Mouscron, scoring 11 goals for the club in the second half of last season.
While he maintains a good relationship with Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp, it is not a given he will get his breakthrough at Anfield anytime soon, for certain bureaucratic reasons.
But he can go some way to changing some things by becoming more and more influential for Mainz who continue the battle to remain in the German topflight.
Training or even playing alongside stars like Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and others will certainly give the striker a confidence boost, as well as build up his profile but he will have to earn the trust first as everyone continue to observe his performances from now till the summer.
If he keeps the goals or assists coming, he will no doubt, have elite suitors come next business window, or perhaps Klopp's hand could be forced to find a way of integrating the Nigerian into his team.
