James Maddison insists Iheanacho did not foul Varane in build-up to Leicester's disallowed goal
Published: April 02, 2022Leicester City attacking midfielder James Maddison was disappointed with the decision of the referee to disallow what would have been a late winner for the visitors against Manchester United at Old Trafford, saying that Kelechi Iheanacho won the ball cleanly in the build-up to the 79th minute goal.
Manchester United defender Raphaël Varane was holding off Iheanacho with his hand before minimal contact from the Leicester City number 14.
The Super Eagles striker slotted through a pass to Maddison who smashed in at the near post for 2-1 but the goal was chalked off after a VAR review with Andre Mariner ruling that the Nigerian committed a foul.
Iheanacho, with a brilliant diving header, opened the scoring in the 63rd minute and Fred converted from close range to level matters three minutes later.
Speaking to Sky Sports shortly after the game, Maddison said : "The disallowed goal is one of them – you see them given and you see them not given.
"I’m obviously going to be biased and say it’s not a foul. As soon as he goes over to the monitor you know.
"I saw Varane go down. The way he went down I thought it was a twist injury. As soon as the referee went to the monitor I knew something was going to happen that was going to spoil my party."

Iheanacho and his Foxes teammates have an important week coming up with a game against PSV in the quarterfinals of the Europa Conference League on Thursday before a trip to Crystal Palace three days later.
