Two 19-year-olds of Nigerian descent train with Arsenal first team before trip to Crystal Palace
Published: April 03, 2022Two 19-year-olds of Nigerian descent were involved in Arsenal first team training on Sunday before their trip to Selhurst Park where they will be facing Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
Manager Mikel Arteta monitored at close quarters England youth international Miguel Azeez and Mazeed Ogungbo.
A central defender by trade, Ogungbo was called up to the Republic of Ireland U20 squad last month and featured in a friendly against Republic of Ireland Amateurs, while Azeez wasn't among the twelve Nigeria-eligible players summoned to the Young Lions.
Nigerian goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo also participated in the workout at London Colney as did onetime Nigerian Federation target Bukayo Saka who pulled out of the England squad due to a health issue.
Azeez and Ogungbo both started as an Arsenal XI defeated Brentford B 4-1 in behind-closed-doors friendly at London Colney on Wednesday.
Ogungbo has yet to be included in a matchday squad for a Premier League game, while Okonkwo and Azeez have made the bench but were unused substitutes.
Against the Eagles on Monday night, the Gunners are aiming to return to the top four after Tottenham Hotspur leapfrogged them in the standings with a 5-1 rout of Newcastle United on Sunday evening.
