How Nigerian players fared over the weekend : Iheanacho, Ighalo, Onuachu, Success, Collins and more
Published: April 04, 2022Allnigeriasoccer.com presents the roundup of the performance of Nigerian players over the weekend for their clubs after the international break with a couple of them scoring crucial goals for their teams.
England
Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City) : Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho scored Leicester goal in their 1-1 draw against Manchester United at the Old Trafford. The goal was a great stooping header.
However the former Manchester City star missed a gilt-edged chance to make it 2-1 as he scooped the ball way too high above David De Gea.
Iheanacho then 'assisted' James Maddison's supposed second goal for the Foxes but the strike was disallowed by VAR as the Nigerian fouled Raphael Varane in the buildup to Maddison's effort.
The self styled 'Senior man' has now scored seven goals and has nine assists to his name this season.
Emmanuel Dennis (Watford) : Watford's Emmanuel Dennis came off the bench on Saturday lunchtime in Watford's 2-0 away defeat to title chasing Liverpool at Anfield.
It was his second game from the bench for his club this season of the 28 matches he has played. Dennis is his club's top scorer this season with nine league goals.
Alex Iwobi (Everton) : Nigeria international Alex Iwobi turned from hero to villain in Everton's 2-1 defeat to West Ham United on Sunday. Iwobi was in action for 90 minutes as 10-man Everton fell to the European place chasing side the London Stadium.
Iwobi was part of the buildup to Mason Holgate's goal but gave away the ball enrohte to West Ham's second and winning goal. It was Iwobi’s 18th league appearance for the Toffees this season and he has scored two goals.
Carney Chukwuemeka, Tim Iroegbunam (Aston Villa) : The youngsters were not in action but sat on the bench for all 90 minutes as Aston Villa were defeated 2-1 by Wolverhampton Wanderers over the weekend.
Germany
Taiwo Awoniyi (Union Berlin) : Former Nigeria youth international Taiwo Awoniyi scored the only goal in Union Berlin's 1-0 defeat of FC Cologne at the Ander Alten Foresteiri stadium on Friday evening.
The striker who was in Nigeria's squad at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon struck in the 49th minute and was in action for 88 minutes before he was substituted by Kevin Behrens.
Awoniyi has now scored 12 Bundesliga goals in 25 matches.
Jamilu Collins (Paderborn) : Super Eagles left back Jamilu Collins provided an assist for his club in the second tier of German football on Saturday as Paderborn defeated Hamburg 2-1.
Kevin Ehizibue (Cologne) : The fullback was in action for Cologne on the 1-0 defeat to Union Berlin. He was yellow-carded in the game and was substituted by Jan Thielmann in the 46th minute.
Italy
Isaac Success (Udinese) : Out of favour Nigeria international Isaac Success provided two assists for his Serie A side Udinese as they thrashed visiting Cagliari on Sunday.
Success' assists for the Zebras is now five in total and he has scored just once in the Italian top flight in 16 league games.
France
Terem Moffi (Lorient) : One-cap Super Eagles striker Terem Moffi scored Lorient’s only goal as they were brushed aside 5-1 by Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday’s Ligue 1 fixture in which Kylian Mbappe and Neymar scored a brace each while Lionel Messi completed the rout.
The Nigeria international has now botched up five goals in the Ligue 1 with three assists for Lorient.
Belgium
Paul Onuachu (Genk) : He scored a hat-trick in Genk's 5-0 mauling of Eupen at the on Sunday in the Belgian topflight.
The beanpole striker who was incredibly left out by Austin Eguavoen in his 2022 FIFA World Cup playoff squad against Ghana has scored 19 league goals this season.
Onuachu scored two penalty goals in the 11th and 45th minutes before rounding off his strikes with 79 minutes played in the one-sided clash.
The win ended Genk’s run of three consecutive games without a win (two defeats and one draw).
Onuachu was replaced nine minutes to full time by Andras Nemeth.
Valentine Ozornwafor (Sporting Charleroi) : Former Enyimba defender Ozornwafor was on the losing side on Sunday as Sporting Charleroi suffered a 4-0 defeat to Anderlecht.
Netherlands youth international Joshua Zirkee was, one of the scorers for Anderlecht.
Ozornwafor was in action for 90 minutes and has thus started 11 of the 12 matches he has played for his club this season.
Turkey
Olarenwaju Kayode (Sivasspor) : Former Nigeria youth international Kayode played in a three-man forward line and got on the scoresheet for his Turkish Super Lig side Sivasspor on Saturday in a 2-2 draw against Giresunspor.
The goal was his sixth of the campaign for his club and his eighth in all competitions.
Scotland
Joe Aribo, Leon Balogun, Calvin Bassey (Rangers) : Nigeria trio of Leon Balogun, Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey were all in action for Glasgow Rangers for 90 minutes on Sunday in the Old Firm derby as they lost 2-1 to rivals Celtic.
Netherlands
Maduka Okoye (Sparta Rotterdam) : Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye was impressive in Sparta Rotterdam's 1-1 draw against SC Heerenveen in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Okoye made a string of great saves in his impressive outing.

Onoriede Marshal (Bnei Sakhnin) : Nigerian striker Oniriede Marshal was in action for his Israeli side Bnei Sakhnin on Sunday in their 2-1 win away defeat to Hapoel Tel Aviv on Saturday.
Marshal has scored once on seven league games this season.
