Teenage Nigeria-eligible CB named in Arsenal matchday squad in loss to Crystal Palace
Published: April 04, 2022Irish-Nigerian central defender Mazeed Ogunbo, 19, received his first call-up to the Gunners first team but was an unused substitute in their Monday night Premier League game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
The hosts, without French U21 winger Michael Olise who is eligible to represent Nigeria at the senior level through his father, defeated a poor Arsenal 3-0 to dent the north London side's top four chances with Tottenham Hotspur now comfortable in the coveted 4th spot after their 5-1 mauling of Newcastle United on Sunday evening.
Ogunbo has played 20 games for the Arsenal U-23 side this season and tonight's decision by manager Mikel Arteta was ostensibly due to the absence of Kieran Tierney.
Jean-Philippe Matete put the Eagles ahead with a header from a set-piece before Ghana forward Jordan Ayew latched onto a fantastic through pass from Joachim Anderson in the 29th minute to fire past Aaron Ramsdale
Arsenal put up some fight after the break and created two cut chances early in the second half but Emile Smith Rowe and Martin ødegaard's strikes were tame to cause any real havoc for Palace.
However things got worse for the Gunners as Wilfried Zaha was fouled in the Arsenal penalty box. The Ivorian stepped up to put away the spot kick with 16 minutes left in the one-sided game.
Palace are now 9th in the Premier League table with 37 points while Arsenal are in fifth spot.
