Rangers' Nigeria international left-back named in Europa League Team of the Week
Published: April 08, 2022Versatile Rangers left-back Calvin Bassey has been named in the Europa Team of the Week by football statistics website Whoscored following the conclusion of the first leg quarterfinal matches on Thursday, April 7.
The Nigeria international was one of the standout performers for the Light Blues in a 1-0 loss to Sporting Braga at the Estádio Municipal de Braga.
Bassey started the game in his preferred left-back position but moved to central defence just past the hour mark when manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst made a triple substitution.
With a rating of seven, Bassey, the only Rangers player included in the UEL Team of the Week, was deployed at left-back in a 4-4-2 formation.
The Italian-born youngster completed a joint game high two dribbles, won one foul for his team while giving away one, was accurate in 82.8 percent of his passes and touched the ball 88 times, more than any other player in the Rangers squad.
Bassey registered a game-high five tackles, made two interceptions and one clearance and blocked one shot.
Other Nigerian players in action in the Europa League on Thursday include Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun, while young center back Ajibola Alese was a non-playing substitute for West Ham United in a 1-1 draw versus Lyon.
