PL2: Azeez gets minutes under his belt as Arsenal end season with five consecutive draws
Published: April 30, 2022Ahead of a possible Premier League debut, Miguel Azeez got minutes under his belt with Arsenal as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United in their final Premier League 2 game of the 2021-2022 season on Friday evening.
Azeez has been temporary promoted to the first team to provide cover for the injured Ghana central midfielder Thomas Party and as a result had not played for the development squad since April 4 prior to the visit of Leeds United.
It was the fifth consecutive draw played by the Gunners in the division as they failed to pick up three points in previous encounters with Blackburn Rovers, Crystal Palace, Manchester City and Manchester United.
Despite the draw, Arsenal who are on 41 points, two less than Manchester United, are guaranteed a top four position.
Azeez anchored Arsenal's midfield and played the full game, wingers Nathan Butler-Oyedeji and Joel Ideho entered the game as subs in the 72nd and 85th minute respectively and a fourth player of Nigerian descent in goalkeeper Ovie Ejeheri was a non-playing substitute.
James Olayinka wasn't included in the Gunners matchday squad but was at the Emirates Stadium to cheer on his teammates.
Marcelo Flores broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute but Leeds United were able to earn a point thanks to Sean McGurk who leveled the score in the 70th minute.
