'There's so much talent' - Ikpeba disagrees with Rangnick, insists Man Utd don't have a striker problem
Published: May 10, 2022Retired Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has insisted that Manchester United do not have a striker problem despite the club's poor performance in this season's Premier League.
The Red Devils loaned out Anthony Martial to Sevilla in the January transfer window, Mason Greenwood was unavailable for selection for reasons everyone is aware of and Edinson Cavani has had an injury plagued season.
In the days leading up to the close of the winter transfer market, Ralf Rangnick was eyeing moves, loan or permanent, for Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic and Julien Alvarez but the German wasn't backed by the United Board.
The incoming Austria manager raised the issue of not being able to sign an attacker in the January transfer window may have contributed to their dismal season.
Former African Footballer of the Year Ikpeba disagreed with the German, saying that Manchester United have so many talented players in the squad but questioned the club's playing style.
Speaking on SuperSport's Monday Night Football, monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com, Ikpeba said : "I agree with the Board. When you look at the roster of Manchester United, there is so much talent in that squad - Pogba, Cavani and Ronaldo.
"Why is he thinking about bringing a striker? The problem of Manchester United is not a striker, it's how they play football. The squad from the defence to the attack, how do you attack and defend the same time?
"When you look at Liverpool, Manchester City the way they play, there's synergy in the squad.
"With Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Manchester United defeated City home and away, so in certain moments the quality was there but the consistency wasn't so you have to question the mentality of these players."
Ikpeba was in the Monaco side that held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw in a Champions League quarterfinal tie at Old Trafford during the 1997-1998 season.
