Ex-Scotland boss reveals Rangers could sell Super Eagles defender on one condition
Published: May 24, 2022Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish has claimed Rangers would be open to selling Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey only if they receive a bid too good to turn down.
There has been transfer buzz around the player over the last one week after his impressive performances in the Europa League showpiece and Scottish Cup final.
West Ham United and Aston Villa are reportedly keeping tabs on the two-cap Nigeria international with a view to a move in the summer.
McLeish has suggested that Rangers would find it difficult to keep hold of Bassey if one of the Premier League clubs he's being linked with firm up their interest by tabling a big bid.
"There do seem to be a lot of rumours. If there’s another incredible bid from down south, it’s difficult to stop that," McLeish said to Football Insider.
"He’s becoming a sought after component and rightly so with his performance levels. So much so there’s interest outside of Rangers who would obviously like to have him in their team. That country just happens to be over the border in England.
"They will also be aware that if someone comes in with a monstrous bid for him, it can help them recruit more players. Obviously, they would need to fill the void that he leaves and he’s proven to be a very versatile player."
Bassey joined Rangers as a free agent after leaving Leicester City in the summer of 2020 and has gone on to make 65 appearances for the Glasgow giants.
