Should Manchester United loan or keep Shola Shoretire next season?
Published: May 24, 2022Manchester United need a major squad rebuild and the club hierarchy recently appointed ex-Ajax manager Erik Ten Haag to oversee it.
The Red Devils have underperformed massively considering the number of high profile players in the squad like Paul Pogba, Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane, and Edinson Cavani, among others.
A major squad rebuild is always synonymous with the involvement of a few academy players just like Arsenal is undergoing with the involvement of Bukayo Saka, and Emile Smith Rowe.
However, at a club with the size and prestige of Manchester United, there will undoubtedly be a huge pressure to get good results as the rebuild goes on.
Manchester United are also in possession of highly talented academy graduates and this includes Shola Shoretire who is of Nigerian descent.
The winger has made a total of three Premier League appearances but is yet to open his goalscoring account.
He is a promising footballer who will undoubtedly flourish under Erik Ten Haag's tutelage but one question remains. Should Manchester United loan or keep Shoretire next season?
While the youngster is a highly versatile player who is capable of playing in multiple positions across the forward line, he is still very young and would undoubtedly make mistakes and have off-games which is synonymous with the growth of a young player.
The Premier League is an unforgiving environment for blooding in youngsters and a few mistakes could have a negative impact on Shoretire's confidence.
If his off-games drag on for long, the odds of attracting criticisms get higher which will further dent an already fragile confidence.
If he is kept as a rotational option, he may not get enough game-time to further his development quickly.
I would certainly suggest that Manchester United follow the blueprint on how Arsenal handled William Saliba. The French defender was sent on loan to gain more playing time and is expected to join up with the Gunners this summer.
His loan was also carefully selected as Olympique Marseille's manager Jorge Sampaoli favours an identical playing style to Mikel Arteta.
As such, he will be going back to the Emirates Stadium with a full season under his belt with one of the top French clubs.
Manchester United should loan Shoretire to a club with a similar style of play to Erik Ten Haag so that the forward can gain more experience before coming back to Old Trafford to prove himself.
