Official : Brentford pass up the opportunity to sign Irish-Nigerian winger permanently
Published: May 25, 2022Premier League side Brentford have provided a squad update for their B team following the conclusion of the 2021-2022 season.
The Bees have confirmed that Republic of Ireland underage international of Nigerian descent Deji Sotona is one of seven B Team players that will depart the club following the expiry of their contracts.
The Manchester United academy product arrived at Brentford on loan from Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice in the January transfer window and went on to make eleven appearances for the B Team, scoring one goal.
Brentford will not be taking up the option to buy Sotona on a permanent basis following the end of his loan deal.
Commenting on the departure of Sotona, Brentford B Head Coach Neil MacFarlane told the club's official website : "As for Deji, who came to us on loan, he has been able to build his fitness with us and has had an impact in the games he has played for us.
"He featured in the Atlantic Cup and did well before helping us to some victories towards the end of the season.
"We feel it’s the right time for him to play first team football elsewhere."
Sotona rejected a three-year contract at Manchester United prior to his move to OGC Nice in September 2020 because he has the ambition of playing first team football.
However, the Irish-Nigerian has yet to make his senior debut for the Ligue 1 outfit as Patrick Vieira, who promised him first team football at OGC Nice, left the club three months after his arrival.
