Why Chelsea should consider Super Eagles defender to fill the void left by Christensen
Published: June 04, 2022One of the challenges for the Blues to face after their recent takeover by a consortium led by American billionaire Todd Boehly is the situation of the centre-back position.
Officially, German defender Antonio Rudiger has joined Real Madrid on a free transfer while Andreas Christensen has also decided to leave Stamford Bridge.
The futures of Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso are still up in the air, which will leave a huge void to fill for the Chelsea recruitment team.
As we all know that the centre-back position is one of the most important positions on the pitch which can not be neglected, allnigeriasoccer.com will be taking a look at why Chelsea should consider Super Eagles defender Kevin Akpoguma to fill the void left by Christensen.
Before going into why Akpoguma should be considered, let us understand what Christensen brings to Thomas Tuchel's team.
The German manager utilises a 3-centreback formation and uses Christensen on the right side with Thiago Silva in the middle and Antonio Rudiger on the left.
The Denmark international's main job is to aid ball progression on the right into the wingback and midfield players, mainly Reece James, Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount.
Sometimes, he is tasked with screening the defence when Antonio Rudiger or Thiago Silva pushes upward aggressively.
These traits are exactly what Kevin Akpoguma excels at. The former Germany U-20 captain, who has a Nigerian dad and German mom, loves to get on the ball and look for smart forward passes.
He also participates in systemic build-up plays from behind and is very good in his decision making.
He once said he modeled his game after Jerome Boateng when he was a youth player and while he is not at the level of Boateng, he does play similarly.
Additionally, if Chelsea were to pick Akpoguma to replace Christensen, he would bring more defensive capabilities as the Denmark international is not known for his defensive nous.
