Sheffield Wednesday interested in Liverpool-reared central defender of Nigerian descent
Published: June 21, 2022Sheffield Wednesday are the latest club linked with a move for Liverpool academy product Michael Ihiekwe.
Yorkshire Live is reporting that Ihiekwe is on the shortlist of central defenders Sheffield Wednesday are targeting during the summer transfer window.
There is uncertainty over the future of the Super Eagles hopeful at Rotherham United as his existing contract expires on June 30, 2022.
The 29-year-old has been offered fresh terms to extend his stay at the AESSEAL New York Stadium but nothing has been signed as of now, meaning he could leave as a free agent on July 1.
Owls boss Darren Moore is the market for a centre-back following the release of Sam Hutchinson and Chey Dunkley, while Harlee Dean and Jordan Storey who were loaned in last season have returned to their parent clubs.
Ihiekwe played a pivotal role as the Millers were promoted back to the second tier of English football, starting 42 of the 46 games in the division.
He has scored seven goals and assisted eight others in 126 matches in the League One, while making 57 appearances in the Championship in which he netted four times.
Derby County have also been credited with an interest in Ihiekwe this summer.
