Manchester United urged to sign Super Eagles striker to play second fiddle to Ronaldo
Published: June 21, 2022In an opinion piece by The Athletic's Carl Anka and Maram AlBaharna (subscription required) on June 21, 2022, English Premier League giants Manchester United have been urged to make a move for Victor Osimhen in the summer transfer window.
The Athletic has recommended that manager Erik Ten Hag has to delve into the market for a striker that will play second fiddle to United's world-class centre-forward Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portugal icon is aging and his minutes needs to be managed in the forthcoming season ahead of his participation in the 2022 World Cup.
Anthony Martial, back from his loan spell at Sevilla, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho were behind Ronaldo in the pecking order of strikers last season.
The sports website has identified five strikers who can act as cover for Ronaldo in Europa League games and midweek Premier League fixtures namely Tammy Abraham (AS Roma), Victor Osimhen (Napoli) , Gianluca Scamacca (Sassuolo), Amine Gouiri (Nice) and Patrik Schick (Bayer Leverkusen).
The Nigeria national teamer finished the 2021-2022 season with 18 goals in 32 appearances for Napoli and recently took his tally to 15 goals in 23 appearances for the Super Eagles after his double brace against São Tomé and Príncipe.
Osimhen has been linked with a move to Manchester United but the Red Devils' rumored pursuit of the 2015 U17 World Cup winner appears to have cooled.
Using data from smartercout, The Athletic highlighted that Osimhen is a direct runner, confident shooter, capable of pressing from the front and hassling centre-backs, and a quick striker.
It would cost a fortune to sign the 23-year-old, with Napoli valuing him in the region of 100 million euros.
