Chelsea legend hails impact of Ziyech in Morocco's shootout win over Spain
Published: December 07, 2022
Chelsea legend Pat Nevin had plenty of admiration and good reviews about the Morocco national team and stressed that the likes of Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech had a positive impact in the win.
Morocco beat Spain 3-0 on penalties after the game had gone into extra time with both sides playing out a goalless draw.
Nevin praised the contributions of Ziyech and former Southampton star Sofiane Boufal while on his commentary duties with the BBC Radio World Service.
"The Moroccans needed to get Hakim Ziyech and Sofiane Boufal high up the pitch in an area where they can give some sort of help to the centre-forward," Nevin stated.
"Youssef En-Nesyri had little to work on. He's getting nothing out of Manchester City duo, Rodri and Aymeric Laporte.
Nevin went on to describe how Spain dominated the game with their passing game.
"Spain had over 1,000 passes in the game. They applied more pressure but did not make use of their chances.
Morocco topped Group F to join Nigeria as the only African sides to have done so at the World Cup.
The Super Eagles achieved that feat in France 1998 after wins against Bulgaria and Spain before a defeat to Paraguay in the group stage.
