Athletic Bilbao coach names two Rangers players to watch, including Dessers, ahead of UEL showdown
Published: April 10, 2025
Athletic Bilbao manager Ernesto Valverde has singled out two Rangers players to watch ahead of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final clash, praising the Scottish side's attacking potential.
Valverde highlighted the quality of Rangers' squad, noting their fast-paced, dynamic style of play.
"They’ve got a good team. They move well across the pitch, very fast," Valverde said, as quoted by Rangers Review.
He went on to emphasize the variety in Rangers' game, which includes a strong counter-attacking threat.
The Athletic Bilbao boss specifically mentioned Cyriel Dessers and Vaclav Cerny as key players for Rangers, describing them as dangerous attacking options.
"Players like Dessers and Cerny, who can play well. They can compete with any team,” Valverde added.
The manager acknowledged the strength of Rangers, who are just three years removed from their agonizing defeat in the Europa League final in Seville.
Valverde, who is aiming to lead his team to a final at San Mamés, also spoke about the challenge of playing at Ibrox, describing it as a "big challenge."
Rangers' recent struggles at home do not concern him, as he believes their attacking ability and overall quality make them one of the toughest teams in the competition.
As both teams prepare for the quarter-final showdown, Valverde’s comments reflect the high regard in which he holds Rangers, particularly their attacking threats in Dessers and Cerny.
It sets the stage for an exciting encounter, with both sides looking to secure a spot in the Europa League semi-finals.
