EFL wrap : Blackpool's Ekpiteta, Colchester Utd's Akinde on target but goals count for nothing
Published: December 29, 2022Allnigeriasoccer.com's round-up of the players of Nigerian descent on target for their respective clubs in English Football League matches on Thursday, December 29.
Players of Nigerian descent who are cap-tied to other nations have been omitted from this report.
Former Nigeria U20 international Marvin Ekpiteta has finally opened his account for the season, netting what turned out to be a consolation for Blackpool as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sheffield United in a Championship match at Bloomfield Road.
Nine minutes into the second half, the central defender pulled one back for the Seasiders with a close range strike.
Ekpiteta netted his first goal of the season after logging 1,859 minutes spread across twenty two games in the division.
In the League Two, experienced striker John Akinde was on target but his goal also counted for nothing as Colchester United were beaten 2-1 by AFC Wimbledon at JobServe Community Stadium.
A spot kick was awarded to Colchester United in the 50th minute after Akinde's Nigerian strike partner Samson Tovide was tripped in the box.
Akinde made no mistake from the spot, taking his tally to three goals in eighteen outings this term.
