Ex-Rangers star berates Nottingham Forest striker for denying Awoniyi chance to score v Chelsea

Former Rangers midfielder Charlie Adam, has faulted Nottingham Forest's striker, Brennan Johnson on his decision to go for goal rather than finding Nigeria's Taiwo Awoniyi in Sunday's Premier League game against Chelsea which ended 1-1.

Ivorian right back, Serge Aurier canceled out a first half goal by Raheem Sterling which saw Forest rise to 18th in the standings after Sunday's fixture.

The goal was Aurier's first club goal in two years but before the equaliser, the team had a chance to score earlier in the second half possibly through Awoniyi.

Morgan Gibbs-White released Johnson in acres of space down the right flank and he raced towards goal.

Awoniyi raced forward in support, but Johnson ignored him and went for the strike himself that Kepa kept out with a strong hand before the Blues scrambled away the rebound much to the disappointment of the Nigerian who kept on remonstrating.

Adam was in the commentary box for BBC Radio 5 Live and bared his thoughts.

"That's exactly what Nottingham Forest wanted, for Johnson to be one on one with Azpilicueta.

"He went for the shot and tries to be greedy when he could have squared it to Awoniyi and Kepa makes an easy save," Adam analysed.

Awoniyi was substituted in the 88th minute of the game by Neco Williams and could not add to his three goals in the Premier League this season.

The Nigerian also scored one goal in the Carabao Cup.

Awoniyi's compatriot Emmanuel Dennis was an unused substitute while Chelsea brought on Carney Chukwuemeka three minutes to full time for Christian Pulisic.
