U20 AFCON : Five things we learned from Flying Eagles' convincing 4-0 win v Tunisia
Published: March 10, 2023
Nigeria's Flying Eagles on Friday evening defeated Tunisia 4-0 to finish their campaign at the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
All Nigeria Soccer presents five things we learned from the match at the Cairo International Stadium.
1. Ochedikwu's promising display
Football supporters, scouts and the CAF technical team must have wondered why Flying Eagles head coach, Ladan Bosso had not featured youngster, Caleb Ochedikwu in the team's previous matches.
He was very impressive on midfield, replacing Muhammad Aminu in the starting lineup.
The player barely got his passes wrong in the games and had particularly a good first half.
2. Aniagboso's Gaffes
Reliable goalkeeper, Chijioke Aniagboso who had not conceded any goal until the semifinals defeat to The Gambia did not pick up any ball from his post on Friday.
However, he had a rather average first half and made two costly mistakes, one leading to the goal that was thankfully canceled by the VAR.
Aniagboso somewhat redeemed himself in the second half with a superb save to push away the ball from a long range strike for Tunisia's corner kick.
3. Jude Sunday's day
Forward Jude Sunday had most times been brought off the substitutes bench but on Friday, he started for the team.
Sunday scored two brilliant goals and the second one was, particularly a thing of beauty - a powerful shot from the edge of the Tunisian box.
He however missed some chances, it must be noted, with some poor decisions.
4. Ogwuche, Fredrick's partnership
The defensive partnership of Abel Ogwuche and Benjamin Fredrick seem a, much better prospect than the captain, Daniel Bamayi getting into the equation.
Despite losing to Gambia in the semifinals, both defenders have struck a great understanding in the centre of the defence.
It will be interesting to see what the team will look like hopefully in tune-up friendlies ahead of the U-20 World Cup.
5. Flying Eagles need creative spark
The 4-0 win against Tunisia shows that indeed the team can score goals.
However, they don't create ample chances and when they they do, don't always put them away.
This clearly shows that the Eagles will need to reinforce ahead of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia.
This is where some Nigerian players in diaspora come in.
The team have gone past the challenges on the African continent. They are in contention to face teams from Europe, South America and Asia at the World Cup.
Players who have trained and played competitive matches with some of the finest players in the world will be needed at this point especially in the creative midfield position.
And, at least one of them is needed in the attacking positions.
