'He's in significant pain' - Villarreal boss suggests Chukwueze faces late fitness test pre-Celta
Published: April 30, 2023
Villarreal head coach, Quique Setién, has suggested that Samuel Chukwueze faces a late fitness test before the La Liga meeting with Celta de Vigo at the Estadio de la Cerámica on Sunday, April 30.
Chukwueze suffered an ankle injury in the 4-2 win over Espanyol on Thursday and has undergone tests to determine the extent of the injury
Setién has refused to rule the winger out of contention and his availability for the game against Celta de Viga depends on how he's feeling in the hours leading up to the game.
In quotes relayed by Spanish newspaper El Periódico Mediterráneo, Setién said at the pre-match press conference : "They did tests on him on Friday. He is in significant pain and we have to see now how he arrives, and the chances he may have to play and if he is fit. We'll see how he is tomorrow."
Chukwueze is one of the first names on the team sheet since Setién took over the managerial reigns at the Yellow Submarine following the departure of Unai Emery to Aston Villa last October.
In 27 outings with the former Barcelona coach in the dugout, the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup winner has registered eighteen goal involvements (11 goals, 7 assists) - the same number he managed in 71 games under Javier Calleja.
Villarreal, who are fifth in the standings, are aiming for another win as they continue their push for a Champions League position.
