Chukwueze's link with Real Madrid: Is Villarreal winger a better than option than Rodrygo?
Published: June 07, 2023Samuel Chukwueze has been linked with a move to Real Madrid after an impressive season with Villarreal.
Chukwueze recorded 13 goals and 11 assists in all competitions in what was his most productive season for Villarreal.
With a year left on his contract, the Yellow Submarine are ready to dispose him of so that they won't lose him for a free next summer.
Having established that he has been linked with Real Madrid, the question is whether Santiago Bernabeu is his best destination.
Supposing he signed for Los Blancos, he will have to contest for a place in the starting XI with Brazilian forward, Rodrygo who has proven to be a vital player for Real Madrid. So let's do a comparison between both players using their performances in La Liga last season.
Rodrygo scored 9 goals and recorded 8 assists last season in 34 games which is more than that of Chukwueze who could only register 6 goals and 5 assists despite playing more games.
Stats from Fbref.com also revealed that the Brazilian shoots the ball better than the Super Eagles forward, with 0.35 of his shots leading to goal as compared to 0.26 of the latter.
Rodrygo's 87.4% passing accuracy was also better than that of Chukwueze who recorded 76.8% accuracy and he also registered more passes into the final third(the opposition defensive area) than the Nigerian winger.
Regarding their involvement in the final third, the Brazilian winger had more goal contributions, more goal per game, better shot-creating and goal-creating actions than the Villarreal winger
Defensively, Chukwueze's 26 defensive actions, that is tackles plus interceptions are more than Rodrygo who had 25 despite playing one game less than the former.
The foregoing implies that unless Rodrygo gets injured or Chukwueze hits the ground running, the Nigerian will find playing time hard to come by if he joins the Los Blancos.
Besides the performances on the pitch, it has also been reported that Real Madrid's President Fiorentino Perez is a big fan of Rodrygo which might make it more difficult to drop him.
Therefore, the Super Eagles star should move elsewhere where he will get more playing time and develop into one of the best in his position.
He is just 24 which also means he still has time to play for Real Madrid in the future.
