Battle for Ikwuemesi hots up: Genoa, Cagliari join AC Milan in race for ex-Flying Eagles star
Published: June 24, 2023Newly promoted Italian Serie A clubs Genoa and Cagliari have joined seven-time UEFA Champions League winners, AC Milan in the pursuit of former Flying Eagles cent e-forward Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi.
Transfer market reporter Sacha Tavolieri revealed on his Twitter page on Saturday morning that Genoa and Cagliari have taken the first step towards signing the Nigerian striker.
Per the report, unlike AC Milan, both teams have met with Ikwuemesi's representatives as they battle it out for his signature.
Genoa have regained promotion to the Serie A having finished second in the Serie B last season and need the services of the Nigerian striker to protect their status in the Italian topflight next season.
Cagliari were promoted to the Serie A via the playoffs after finishing fifth in the regular season and they intend to bolster their attacking department with the addition of Ikuemesi.
The 21-year-old was in decent form for NK last season in the Prva Liga, the Slovenian first division where he notched 9 goals and five assists in 30 appearances, his highest goal contribution since moving to Europe.
Ikwuemesi was part of the Flying Eagles of Nigeria team coached by Ladan Bosso at the 2020 WAFU B U-20 Championship.
