WWC Ireland 0 Nigeria 0: Super Falcons make history despite goalless draw

The Super Falcons made history by avoiding defeat for the first time in three consecutive Women's World Cup matches, holding the Republic of Ireland to a goalless draw to qualify for the last 16 of the ongoing tournament in Australia and New Zealand.

In their final Group B game, Nigeria faced winless Ireland with the Super Falcons eyeing a spot in the knockout stage.

Ireland, having performed well against Australia and Canada, aimed to secure their first World Cup points against Nigeria.

The match kicked off with both teams trying to find their rhythm. Ireland had an early chance in the 5th minute when Agg made a good run down the right and crossed to Farrelly, but McCabe's shot went wide.

Nigeria allowed Ireland to have possession and looked to counter-attack.

In the 13th minute, Ireland lost focus, and a mistake from Louise Quinn allowed Oshoala to break through on goal.

However, her shot missed the target. Ireland continued to press, and in the 22nd minute, McCabe's flick released O'Sullivan, who passed to Carusa, but her decision to cut the ball back led to a missed opportunity.

The first half ended with no additional time given. Ireland had more ball possession, but Oshoala had the best chance for Nigeria.

In the second half, the Super Falcons showed more intensity, knowing that Australia were leading against Canada in the other group game.

Their efforts paid off in the 51st minute when Payne delivered a cross, and Kanu's powerful header was tipped onto the bar by Brosnan.

Oshoala had another chance but missed the target. Ireland's McCabe seemed fatigued, unable to exploit Nigeria's flanks.

Ireland had a chance in the 60th minute, but O'Sullivan's shot was blocked.

Nigeria made two changes in the 66th minute, substituting Oshoala and Kanu with Monday and Onumonu.

Brosnan made a brave save at Ajibade's feet, while a collision at the back post left Nnadozie and Carusa injured, but they both carried on.

In the 86th minute, both teams made changes. Ireland's Larkin and Sheva came on for Payne and Agg, and 40-year-old Ebi entered the pitch for Nigeria.

The game ended on a somewhat disappointing note for Nigeria, who seemed content with second place.

Seven minutes of added time couldn't alter the outcome, as Nigeria held on to second place, and Australia claimed the top spot in Group B with a 3-0 victory. Ireland fought hard until the end, but they couldn't take home a win from their first major tournament.
