Reading defender of Nigerian descent Abbey replaces Arsenal starlet in England Men's Elite League squad

Reading's Nigeria-eligible central defender Nelson Abbey has received a late call-up to the England Men's Elite League squad ahead of upcoming matches against Romania and Portugal this month, the English Football Association have announced through a statement on their official website

Manager Joe Edwards has added Abbey to the squad as a replacement for Arsenal starlet Reuell Walters who has pulled out of the Young Lions squad due to injury.

The call-up handed to Abbey has increased the number of players of Nigerian descent named in the England youth team squads to eight.

Noni Madueke (Chelsea), Owen Goodman (Crystal Palace), Samuel Edozie (Southampton), Michael Olakigbe (Brentford), Justin Oboavwoduo (Manchester City), Callum Olusesi (Tottenham Hotspur) and Trevan Sanusi were named on the rosters announced last Friday by the Football Association.

Abbey has been handed a first call-up to England Men's Elite League squad following his fine start to the season at League One outfit Reading.

Having been promoted into Reading's first team at the start of the season, the 20-year-old has made ten appearances in all competitions this term, logging 855 minutes.

Abbey has been identified as a player with leadership qualities and has worn the armband on several occasions this season.

He has attended England U17 and U18 national team training camps in the past.
