Confirmed: Box-to-box Nigeria-eligible midfielder signs new contract with Liverpool
Published: November 07, 2023With a statement on their official website, Premier League giants Liverpool have announced that box-to-box midfielder of Nigerian descent, Afolami Onanuga has signed a new deal with the club.
Onanuga, who began the 2023-2024 season as a first year scholar, has signed his first professional contract with Liverpool.
As per Premier League rules, all players in their U17 year are required to start the season on a scholarship agreement, before they are permitted to sign a first professional football contract on or after their 17th birthday.
Onanuga has been rewarded with a new contract following his impressive performances for the Reds youth teams.
The 2006-born player joined Liverpool at U11 level, rising through the ranks to gain promotion to the U18 team on a permanent basis at the beginning of this season.
The English-Nigerian teenager made his debut for Liverpool U21s in his final season as a schoolboy, coming off the bench for the last ten minutes of a Premier League International Cup encounter against Paris Saint-Germain.
Overall, Onanuga has totaled sixteen appearances in the U18 Premier League and made his debut in the FA Youth Cup against Ipswich Town back in February.
