Published: November 12, 2023
Germany began their campaign at the 2023 Fifa U17 World Cup with an impressive 3-1 win over two-time champions Mexico, with two players of Nigerian descent starring for the European nation.
Germany U17 coach Christian Wück handed starts to RB Leipzig defensive midfielder Winners Osawe and Wolfsburg centre-back David Odogu.
The two players of Nigerian descent were in the Germany squad that won the 2023 European U17 Championship, which served as qualifiers for the ongoing World Cup in Indonesia.
Barcelona starlet Noah Darvich opened the scoring for the Germans in the 29th minute with a back post finish and turned from scorer to provider when he set up Max Moerstedt, who slotted home in the 38th minute.
Eric da Silva Moreira added another goal shortly after the restart, and Tahiel Jimenez pulled one back with fifteen minutes left.
While Odogu went the distance, Osawe, who was on a yellow card, was replaced in the 87th minute.
Germany U17s play against New Zealand on Wednesday, November 15 and then Venezuela in their final group game on Saturday, November 18.
