'Everyone knows Nigeria is a powerhouse'- Legendary Zimbabwe Dream Team striker Peter Ndlovu on Super Eagles
Published: November 18, 2023Former Coventry City and Birmingham City forward Peter Ndlovu - arguably the greatest Zimbabwe soccer player in history - has said that the Super Eagles must be respected ahead of Sunday's 2026 World Cup qualifying match at Stade Huye (Butare).
Ndlovu knows all about the pedigree of the Super Eagles, having faced them three times in his playing days and lost all the games including two World Cup qualifying matches.
Zimbabwe were on the cusp of securing qualification to the 1994 World Cup with a star-studded crop of players dubbed the Dream Team that boasted of players like the Ndlovu brothers Madinda, Adam and Peter, and legendary Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar.
In the final round of qualifiers, they missed out on qualification after a 3-1 loss to Cameroon in Yaounde despite the incredible talent in the squad.
Three-time African champions Nigeria have been to the World Cup on six occasions - 1994, 1998, 2002, 2010, 2014 and 2018.
"Everyone knows Nigeria is a powerhouse in African football. Obviously we have to give them respect, but we need to get good results against them," Ndlovu who is now part of Mamelodi Sundowns management team told the official matchday programme for Zimbabwe versus Nigeria.
"This is an opportunity for us to re-introduce ourselves onto the international football scene."
The Warriors of Zimbabwe are hosting the Super Eagles in Rwanda due to their stadium challenges.
