Watch: Gift Orban among four contenders for UEFA Europa Conference League Goal of the Week
Published: December 01, 20232023 Super Eagles invitee Gift Orban has been nominated for the UEFA Europa Conference League Goal of the Week for matchday five.
The 21-year-old scored a sumptuous goal in Gent's 4-1 victory over Zorya Lugansk at the Ghelamco Arena on Thursday night.
Five minutes before the hour mark in the encounter, the diminutive striker got a cross from right-back Noah Fadiga, controlled the ball and put it beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.
He is set to battle Aleksandar Pešić who scored with a stunning strike for Ferencváros in their 2-1 win over FK Čukaričk, Club Brugge midfielder Casper Nielsen and Aberdeen defender Angus MacDonald for the award.
While Orban has failed to hit his strides in the Jupiler Pro League, he has continued his impressive goalscoring form in the Conference League.
He is the joint top scorer of the competition this season with 5 goals in five games, the same as Benjamin Nygren of Nordsjælland.
His strike yesterday also made him equal Cyriel Dessers' tally of 10 goals in the tournament and move two behind Arthur Cabral, the all-time top scorer.
With Gent securing their place in the next round, the diminutive striker could surpass Cabral's number of goals in the competition before the end of the season.
