Blow for Arsenal as Nigerian defender's injury derails plans for loan move in January
Published: January 09, 2025Arsenal defender Josh Nichols is set to spend some time on the sidelines after suffering an injury that ruled him out of a friendly match last weekend, according to Arsenal youth team guru Jeorge Bird.
The 18-year-old had been expected to feature in the behind-closed-doors friendly against Marseille II, which was part of the team's preparations for the resumption of the Premier League 2 campaign.
Nichols, who has been predominantly playing at left-back in recent matches, is expected to return to his preferred position of right-back once fit, especially following Josh Robinson's recent move to Wigan.
Known for his versatility and ability to play in multiple defensive roles, Nichols has impressed in his six appearances for the U21s in the Premier League 2 this season.
Nichols has also earned a place in Arsenal's senior squad under manager Mikel Arteta.
He made his senior debut in the 2024 Carabao Cup victory over Bolton Wanderers and was named on the bench in subsequent matches against Preston, Leicester, Liverpool, and West Ham in the Premier League.
Nichols' performances have garnered interest from several European clubs, with reports indicating that he was a target for a potential loan move this winter.
However, the recent injury setback is likely to derail those plans for now.
Arsenal U21s will be looking to continue their campaign when they return to competitive action on Monday, facing Norwich City away at Carrow Road.
