Clean sheet number 8: Arsenal goalkeeper on the radar of NFF continues to impress at loan club
Published: December 27, 2023Arsenal-owned goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is enjoying his loan spell at English Football League Two club Wrexham.
As exclusively reported by allnigeriasoccer.com last month, NFF's technical director Augustine Eguavoen has held multiple talks with Okonkwo and his representatives with a view to a potential call-up to the Super Eagles after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Okonkwo spent last season on loan at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz to experience a taste of first-team football, and he has built on his success with some brilliant performances for Wrexham this term.
The Hale End Academy product kept another clean sheet as Wrexham earned a hard-fought 1-0 win against Swindon Town on Boxing Day, which is more impressive given that he recently returned to action after spending twenty-five days on the sidelines due to a jaw injury that required minor surgery.
Okonkwo produced a number of brilliant saves late in the game to ensure Wrexham picked up three points
With his back-to-back clean sheets since making his comeback from injury, the Arsenal loanee took his tally for the season to eight in all competitions.
The 22-year-old has conceded goals in seven of the fifteen matches he has played in since his loan move to the Red Dragons.
If Okonkwo maintains the form he has been showing over the last seventeen months, international recognition could come his way sooner rather than later.
