Super Eagles coach Peseiro provides fresh fitness update on Osimhen pre-Bafana Bafana
Published: February 06, 2024Speaking at the pre-match press conference before his side's 2023 Africa Cup of Nations semifinal showdown with Bafana Bafana, Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro provided a fresh fitness update on Napoli superstar Victor Osimhen.
The reigning African Footballer of the Year was not named in Nigeria's traveling squad to Bouaké on Monday night as he was placed under medical watch with a member of the national team's medical team in Abidjan.
Osimhen has been rated as doubtful to take to the pitch on Wednesday, February 7 due to an abdominal discomfort.
Peseiro admitted that for now he is still in the dark over the availability of the Super Eagles number 9 and added that things will become clearer in the coming hours.
"Up till now I cannot answer right because you know there's a problem with his health. This afternoon I can know better if he can play or not," Peseiro told reporters.
Osimhen is viewed as one of the untouchable players in the Super Eagles starting lineup, having started each of the five matches played by the team at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Although the 2015 Fifa U17 World Cup Golden Boot winner has found the net just once at the ongoing tournament, he has caused problems for opposition defenses with his work rate, physicality and aerial ability.
