'It's not only Osimhen' - Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos insists Nigeria team is not all about African POTY
Published: February 07, 2024
The Super Eagles have a date with South Africa on Wednesday, February 7 and the prize at stake is a place in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria were handed a fitness boost on Tuesday with the return to full training of reigning African Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen who was left out of the traveling squad to Bouaké on Monday night.
The Napoli superstar shook off an abdominal issue, paving the way for him to link up with the squad and make himself available for selection for the showdown against Bafana Bafana.
Billed as the marquee player in the Nigeria team, Osimhen has not really made the impact many would have expected before the start of the tournament, with one goal in five appearances at the ongoing AFCON.
Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman has stepped up to the plate, scoring three goals in his last two matches, while Nantes winger Moses Simon has picked up two official Man of the Match awards.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos highlighted that the Super Eagles team is not all about Osimhen as there are other players that can make the difference.
Reacting to the potential absence of Osimhen at the pre-match press conference, Broos told reporters: "It's not only Osimhen. Again I said in the beginning already that we play a very good team Nigeria with very good players who play allover Europe so it will be tough.
"There is also motivation for us to prove that we are as good as they are and that we can win it also."
Nigeria and South Africa have both scored six goals each at the 2023 AFCON and have been stingy in defense, posting four clean sheets.
