Nigeria 2 Morocco 0: Adoo on target as Falconets start title defence with win against Atlas Lionesses
Published: March 08, 2024The Falconets started their campaign at the 2023 African Games with a 2-0 victory over Morocco at the Cape Coast Stadium on Friday night.
They took the lead in the 20th minute, no thanks to an own goal from the young Morocco goalkeeper Fatima Bambara.
Nigeria doubled the advantage from the boots of talented midfielder Yina Adoo, four minutes before the end of the first half and her strike proving to be their last of the game.
The Nigerian girls have been grouped alongside Morocco who they just defeated, Cameroon who have now withdrawn their participation from the tournament and Senegal.
They will now square up against Senegal in their final group game and a victory will make them qualify for the semifinal as group winners.
Nigeria are the defending champions, having scooped the gold medal in the 2019 edition of the tournament, beating the Indomitable Lionesses on penalties.
They have been in good form lately, and already have their place confirmed for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup which will be staged in Colombia later in the year.
Nigeria will be hoping to build on this momentum and win this competition for the fourth time in their history.
