Spain or Nigeria? Atletico Madrid loanee Omorodion reveals senior national team he wants to represent
Published: March 17, 2024Atletico Madrid loanee Samuel Omorodion has made a decision on his international future, saying he dreams of representing Spain's senior national team.
Born in Melilla, Spain nineteen years ago to Nigerian parents, Omorodion is eligible to wear the colours of his country of birth as well as three-time African champions Nigeria.
However, the Royal Spanish Football Federation are ahead of their Nigerian counterparts in the race for the services of the
Deportivo Alavés goal poacher.
Omorodion became provisionally cap-tied to Spain on July 4, 2023, after coming off the bench for the final eighteen minutes of a 2-1 victory against Iceland in a European U19 Championship qualifier.
He is one step away from realizing his dream of representing La Roja given his current status as a key member of the U21 squad.
On a personal level, Omorodion is enjoying success at his loan club Alaves, for whom he has scored eight goals in 27 outings in the Spanish top-flight and has provided an assist.
Asked if representing Spain at senior level stirs something inside of him, he said to Relevo: "Yes, but you have to be realistic. The senior team is still a little far away. There are still many steps left to reach that dream."
Real Madrid academy product Derik Osede initially represented Spain at youth levels before opting for Nigeria, but he has not received a call-up to the Super Eagles as of now.
Benin City-born defender Godswill Ekpolo, who is best known for his time in the Barcelona academy, chose to represent Nigeria over Spain and trained with the Dream Team before the 2016 Olympic Games.
