Super Eagles team news: Omeruo, Bassey excused from training ahead of showdown against Black Stars
Published: March 21, 2024Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told that Nigeria's interim boss Finidi George excused two players from training on Wednesday, two days between a glamour international friendly between the Super Eagles and Black Stars at the Stade de Marrakech.
Versatile Fulham defender Calvin Bassey and onetime Chelsea centre-back Kenneth Omeruo were present at the training session yesterday but were not allowed to participate in the team's physical activities immediately after prayers.
The official version is that there are no injury worries in the lead up to the game against the Black Stars but things would become clearer after Thursday evening's workout.
Wearing the captain's armband, Omeruo played in Kasimpasa's seven-goal thriller against Galatasaray before heading to Morocco.
As for Bassey, he played the entirety of Fulham's impressive win against Tottenham Hotspur, helping goalkeeper Bernd Leno post back-to-back clean sheets at Craven Cottage.
The Super Eagles are already facing a crisis at right-back ahead of their March internationals with Empoli's Tyronne Ebuehi pulling out of the squad after suffering an injury, while Nottingham Forest's Ola Aina wasn't called up due to fitness issues.
Omeruo was pictured with the 'winning team' in official photos released by the Nigeria Football Federation last night but it has come to light that he gatecrashed the photo as he didn't train at all.
West Brom's Semi Ajayi and newbie Benjamin Tanmu are the other central defenders in camp ahead of the friendly matches.
Luton Town's Gabriel Osho was forced to withdraw from the roster after suffering an injury in the closing minutes of the Hatters 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on March 9.
