'I'm hungry' - Ajax striker Akpom annoyed he didn't score a hat-trick against PEC Zwolle
Published: March 31, 2024Anglo-Nigerian forward Chuba Akpom has reflected upon his performance during Ajax's 3-1 victory over PEC Zwolle in an Eredivisie fixture played on Sunday.
The Hale End Academy product bagged a brace to help bolster Ajax's hope of participating in the Eredivisie's European competition play-offs.
It was his second time scoring two goals in a league game since his move to the Netherlands, having bagged his first against Heerenveen last November.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, the Super Eagles-eligible forward felt he could have done more in the game by scoring a hat trick.
"It's easy to just say two goals. I'm happy but I wanted to get a hat-trick today and I'm hungry," Akpom remarked.
"As you could probably see when I play, I thrive off creating chances, scoring goals, something that I dream about and work on every single day.
"I am annoyed I didn't get a hat-trick basically."
Due to the injury to Brian Brobbey, Akpom was named in the starting lineup for the second time in three games and made the most of the opportunity.
Since moving to Johan Cruyff Arena, the 28-year-old has had to play second fiddle to Brobbey, starting just five games in the Eredivisie this term.
Despite his lack of adequate game time, he has notched double digits of goals, finding the back of the net 13 times across all competitions.
Ajax's manager John van 't Schip is said not to be a big fan of the London-born forward but it remains to be seen whether he will change his stance if Brobbey keeps delivering the goods.
