Chippa United GK Nwabali reacts to reports linking him with Queens Park Rangers, Al-Ettifaq
Published: April 04, 2024Super Eagles shot-stopper Stanley Nwabali, who emerged as a star at the recent Africa Cup of Nations , has addressed speculation linking him with moves to Queens Park Rangers and Steven Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq.
The 27-year-old Chippa United goalkeeper entered the AFCON as a relatively unknown quantity but quickly established himself as a key figure in Nigeria's run to the final.
Despite conceding four goals, he also managed four crucial clean sheets, only falling short of the Golden Glove award to South Africa's Ronwen Williams.
Nwabali's heroics were particularly evident in the semi-final against Bafana Bafana, where he saved two penalties to propel his team to their first AFCON final since 2013.
These performances haven't gone unnoticed, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reporting interest from both QPR and Saudi Arabia's Al-Ettifaq.
However, Nwabali revealed he has yet to be officially informed about these links.
"You see, to be honest, I've never seen anything on my table ever since AFCON," Nwabali told FARPost.
"Maybe those clubs might have spoken to my team or my manager. But at this point, we can't do anything.
"And they can't approach me because it would be unprofessional. They must go to my club or my manager.
"So I don't know if there's something on the table maybe waiting for towards summer or transfer window. You know most clubs always do this. When they show interest, you're opening the way to some other clubs.
"So, some people always keep it a secret, and when they get you, they get you once. For now, I know nothing."
This reported interest adds to rumors circulating before AFCON that Belgian club Royal Union Saint-Gilloise were also keen on acquiring the former Enyimba shot-stopper.
Nwabali's impressive showing at AFCON has undoubtedly placed him in the spotlight.
With the official transfer window approaching, it will be interesting to see if Queens Park Rangers, Al-Ettifaq, or any other clubs decide to make a formal approach for the former Enyimba glovesman.
