Onanuga scores beauty as Liverpool youth team lose seven-goal thriller to Newcastle
Published: April 17, 2024Flying Eagles-eligible box-to-box midfielder Fola Onanuga scored arguably the pick of the goals as Liverpool were beaten 4-3 by Newcastle United in an U18 Premier League fixture at Blue Flames Ground (Northumberland FA) on Tuesday evening.
Onanuga opened his goalscoring account of the 2023-2024 campaign with a beauty from outside the box.
Fifteen minutes into the contest, Onanuga took control of the ball, shifted it to his left foot, and fired a powerful shot that flew past the Magpies goalkeeper.
Josh Donaldson equalized for Newcastle within a minute of the restart before putting the hosts 2-1 up with an effort from distance just before the hour mark to turn the game on its head.
Kone-Doherty brought the game back to parity when he converted a spot kick in the 62nd minute and O'Connor headed in a cross in the 74th minute to give Liverpool back the lead.
However, the game was level again in the 77th minute when Emmanuel Airoboma put the ball into his own net before super-sub Matthew Taylor grabbed the winning goal in the first minute of stoppage time.
Onanuga joined Liverpool at U11 level after he was spotted playing grassroots football in Manchester by Academy scout Ricky Heywood.
The 17-year-old began the season as a first-year scholar and signed his first professional contract with Liverpool in November 2023.
He made his competitive debuts for Liverpool's U18s and development squad in his final season as a schoolboy.
