Confirmed: Super Falcons-eligible striker set to be named in Barcelona's gameday squad v Chelsea
Published: April 27, 2024Super Falcons-eligible striker Vicky López is set to be named in Barcelona's matchday squad on Saturday evening when they take on Chelsea in the semifinal of the UEFA Women's Champions League.
Barcelona Women coach Jonatan Giráldez has taken twenty-two players to the English capital, London, with Lopez part of the traveling squad.
Everything indicates López will be selected in the final squad to take on the Blues, with UEFA permitting teams to name a maximum of 23 players in the matchday squad for Champions League games.
The 17-year-old has played in eight matches in this season's Champions League, logging 104 minutes.
She was in action against Chelsea in the first leg tie at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, replacing Mariona Caldentey after 73 minutes as Barcelona searched for an equalizer.
Erin Cuthbert's goal in the first half was sufficient for Chelsea to secure a memorable 1-0 win on the road last Saturday, ending Barcelona's five-year unbeaten run at home in the process.
Another Super Falcons-eligible teenager Ashanti Akpan could potentially be available for selection, considering the fact that she was spotted training with Chelsea first teamers in their final workout on Friday, under the guidance of manager Emma Hayes.
African legend Asisat Oshoala was in the Barcelona side that thrashed Chelsea 4-0 to win the 2021 UEFA Women's Champions League.
