Cyriel Dessers equals Rangers' 18-year-old record with strike against St Mirren

Super Eagles forward Cyriel Dessers equaled an 18-year-old record when he netted in Rangers 2-1 win over St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership Championship playoffs on Sunday.

The 29-year-old powered home James Tavernier' cross with a precise header in the 74th minute to score the winning goal for the Light Blues and record his 20th goal for the season.

According to statistics from the Scottish Professional Football League official website, the Belgium-born forward has now become the first player to score 20 goals in his first season for Rangers since Kris Boyd did the same for the club in the 2005/2006 season.

Dessers has rightly come under criticism for his profligacy, but there is no denying that he has come up with some big goals for the Light Blues which has made his debut season far from being bad.

He scored the only goal in the victory over Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership last September, did the same against St.Mirren in January and helped them book their place in the Scottish Cup final by bagging a brace against Hearts.

With the Scottish giants in the running for a treble, Philippe Clement will need the Nigeria international to keep his sharpness in front of goal in the coming weeks.

A breakdown of Dessers' twenty goals shows that fourteen were scored in the Premiership, three in the Scottish FA Cup and one apiece in the Europa League, Champions League qualifiers and League Cup.
