'All focus is on Monday' - Cap-tied Fisayo Dele-Bashiru reacts after scoring first goal for Super Eagles
Published: June 08, 2024Tri-national midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru does not have the opportunity to play for either Germany or England again after making his competitive debut for the Super Eagles as they were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa in a 2026 World Cup qualifier on Friday night at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Fisayo earned another call-up to the Super Eagles thanks to an outstanding season that saw him register 15 goal involvements (9 goals, 6 assists) from 39 all-competition appearances for Turkish club Hatayspor.
The Manchester City academy product started and was in action for 61 minutes and his appearance against South Africa cap-ties him to Nigeria for the rest of his career, provided his citizenship is not revoked.
Before the Super Eagles number 10 against South Africa suffered an injury, he capped off a great performance by scoring a stunning equalizer after he was fed by Alex Iwobi thirty-seven seconds into the second half.
Taking to social media on Saturday morning, Dele-Bashiru admitted that he was happy to score his first goal in Nigeria colours but at the same time, he was disappointed that the Super Eagles failed to secure their first win of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The former Sheffield Wednesday man has now turned his attention to Monday's matchday four encounter with Benin's Cheetahs in Abidjan.
Writing on Instagram, Dele-Bashiru said: "Happy to score on my competitive debut for Nigeria, disappointing not to come away with 3pts, now all focus is on Monday".
