Brighton & Hove rising star chooses to represent Nigeria over Netherlands, reveals talks with Randy Waldrum
Published: June 21, 2024Brighton and Hove goalkeeper of Nigerian descent Comfort Erhabor, has expressed her willingness to represent Nigeria at international Level.
Born and raised in the Netherlands to Nigerian parents, the prodigious shot-stopper spent the second half of last season on loan at Scottish side Hibernian in search of valuable first team experience.
The 19-year-old who was invited to Nigeria's U-17 women's team for a pre-tournament training camp for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in 2022, put pen to paper on her first professional contract in January.
Since then, it has been a long wait for an international football berth.
However, she has explicitly revealed her intentions to don the green and white jersey of the African powerhouse, carefully stating that she is in 'no rush' to be integrated into the senior team.
"Yes of course I would love to represent Nigeria even if it's at U20 level just to gain that experience," Erhabor told allnigeriasoccer.com.
"I mean I'm only 19 so there's no rush for me to make that jump to first team right now.
"I would much rather stay at U20 whilst I can and make my mark potentially in the U20s World Cup this year for example.
"I've had discussions with Randy Waldrum but as you may know dealing with Nigeria isn't always as easy or straightforward as it should be."
Acknowledging the fierce competition in the Super Falcons' goalkeeping department, the Dutch-Nigerian was careful to refrain from direct comparisons to first choice Chiamaka Nnadozie.
"I like to think there's traits that she's got I could learn from her and some that I may have that she could learn from me. In that way we can push each other to be better.
"I'm a young goalkeeper who I can't deny still has a lot to learn but I'm very coachable and hard working and when present with a challenge I rise up to the standard." She added.
In view of the forthcoming Olympics, she went on to state that representing Nigeria at the showpiece would be an opportunity she'd take with relish if it ever comes.
"It would be my greatest honour honestly, I would love to! but obviously with an 18-player squad and me not being a part of the qualifiers it's not very likely." She acknowledged
The Super Falcons will begin their Paris 2024 Olympics campaign in Group C against 2007 Women's World Cup runners up Brazil, on the 25th of July at the Stade de Bordeaux.
