Versatile Super Eagles-eligible defender reveals why he dumped Watford for Celtic
Published: June 25, 2024Versatile Irish-Nigerian player Bosun Lawal has revealed the reason behind leaving Watford for Scottish giants Celtic.
The 21-year-old departed the English outfit in 2021 despite being offered a new contract and joined Celtic where he has continued his career progression since then.
He made his senior team debut in the Scottish FA Cup in January 2023, coming on in the second half of the Bhoys 5-0 victory over Greenock Morton which had Super Eagles defender Efe Ambrose in their side on the day.
Lawal has been unable to make any appearance for the first team since then but the club showed their trust in his ability by handing him a contract last summer.
Speaking to TRAINING121PODCAST via 67hail, Lawal disclosed his reasons for leaving Watford for Celtic and explained how he made the decision to join the club.
"I got offered a pro (contract) at Watford, but I just wanted to try something; I wanted to be stretched because I think I was too comfortable at that stage and wanted to get stretched.
"When Celtic came, a couple of other clubs came in; as soon as I heard Celtic, being an Irish person, you know how big Celtic is so I thought 'Yeah, I'm going to go to Celtic' and actually challenge myself, move again, experiencing a different town, different culture so yeah that's what I did, moved to Celtic."
He was on loan with English League One side Fleetwood Town last season. where he took his game to another level.
The Dublin-born player is naturally a defender but played as a midfielder for Fleetwood, featuring in 46 games and mustering six games and two assists across all competitions.
He must be hoping to get the chance to impress Brendan Rodgers during the pre-season games which start with a clash against Ayr United next Friday.
